The collection contains the only known recordings of some of the outstanding Native New Mexican singers of the past. The collection includes seven reel to reel tapes (reformatted to 7 CDs) containing 232 songs recorded by Archuleta. Songs are mostly Native American in origin and mostly without titles, the majority of which were never recorded commercially. A few songs are ceremonial, but the preponderance are round dance songs composed and recorded by Archuleta. Additionally, all of the 24 songs that Archuleta recorded on Tom Tom Records are included on these CDs. The collection also contains six (of a total of 12) Tom Tom 78 lp records, which have been reformatted onto 1 CD (CD 8). The 12 titled songs feature pieces from San Juan, San Felipe, Laguna, Taos and Zuni Pueblos, as well as the Navajo and Hopi. They include vocals in the native languages performed by individual singers or by choruses, and dance songs. Most performers are accompanied by drummers and occasionally by musicians with other native instruments.
